See the Modern Settee we Adapted in its “Natural Habitat” in a Luxury Apartment Building

Last week we showed you a gorgeous modern settee that we adapted:

Well, we just got an email from the designers of the lobby of the luxury apartment building where the settee lives and we want to share those pictures with you. Seeing the finished settee in our workroom is one thing. Seeing it in its “natural habitat” is another.

Look how beautiful this lobby is, and take a look at the settee we upholstered. We also upholstered the four other chairs in the photos:

How Can You Choose the Perfect Upholstery Fabric for Chairs?

If you have an otherwise perfect statement chair suffering from hopelessly worn fabric, or a set of dining chairs in need of an update or upgrade, reupholstering can be the answer to your prayers. There are a lot of reasons why you might need to find upholstery fabric for chairs, from designing custom-built furniture to transforming an old piece into something beautiful again.

Reupholstering Versus Slip Covers: Bringing New Life to Old Chairs

There are two different ways your chairs can be covered in new upholstery fabric: one is by using new fabric slip covers over the existing upholstery, and the other is by stripping the chairs and reupholstering them with the new fabric.

Upholstering is the method used for creating new chairs, and very often for giving new life to older furniture. One of the best aspects of designing and custom-building chairs is choosing the fabric that will be used for the upholstery, and you can also often get the same custom effect by reupholstering existing chairs. Designers often use upholstering as a way to transform furniture so that it matches perfectly with the design of the room it will be used in. Chairs that are to be stripped down and upholstered with new fabric should be of good quality and in solid condition. High-quality chairs of prized styles or antique vintage are popular candidates for reupholstery.

Slip covers are custom-made to fit over the “real” upholstery of the chairs. Slip covers tend to be less expensive than upholstering an entire piece, and are very often used on chairs with “high risk” locations. Whether used as a decorating tool or to protect the upholstery underneath, slip covers should be custom measured and made by professionals for the most attractive and lasting results.

Choosing Chair Upholstery Fabric for Function

Whether you’re choosing upholstery fabric for chairs that will be used to create custom slip covers or to completely upholster your chairs, it’s important to choose fabric that will be practical for the chairs in question.

Where will the chairs be used? The location of the chairs should be a major factor for the appearance of the fabric, but even more importantly for the type and durability of the fabric. You know that chairs used as outdoor furniture for your patio or balcony will need weatherproof fabrics, but you might want to consider an outdoor fabric designed to withstand moisture for entryways or other areas subject to the elements or high-traffic areas.

What risks will the upholstery face? Chairs that serve more of a decorative purpose probably won’t see too much wear and tear, while you favorite spot might need a more durable fabric that won’t show wear, and kitchen chairs might be best off with a stain-resistant fabric.

How can the upholstery fabric be cleaned? Again, it’s probably less of an issue for decorative seating, but it’s still important to know how easily the fabric can be cleaned, and definitely a factor for chairs that will be subjected to everyday dining, children, or pets.

Colors & Patterns: All Part of Your Design

If you haven’t already, it’s important to know what style of interior decorating will be used and what color scheme you’ll have in the room or area where you’ll be placing the chairs. Once you have an idea of what you’d like your chairs to look like, it will help you narrow down the number of upholstery fabric you need to choose from. If you have trouble finding what you want, don’t hesitate to ask for help from a fabric specialist, and show them photos of what you’re looking for. Solid colors and subtle patterns are most commonly used as upholstery fabric for chairs, but if a bold pattern or lively print is what you want, a reputable fabric and design store should be able to help you find it. Upholstery fabric for chairs is available in an enormous variety of colors, patterns, and prints, so don’t be afraid to describe the fabric you want- you might even find there are several choices that meet your requirements.

Texture for Visual & Tactile Perfection

It may sound obvious, but chairs are made for sitting. It may be for your formal dining room or your favorite chair in front of the TV, but no matter what, you’ll see and feel the fabric for at least some duration of time. Take a close look at the texture: it should both flow with the design of the room and feel comfortable to the touch. If you can’t stand the feeling of velvet or you get hives from even the slightest blend of wool, don’t use it! Design isn’t just about looks- good design is about function. Don’t be afraid to keep looking until you find a fabric with the looks and the feel you love.

Adaptation of a Modern Settee in our Custom Workroom

A client recently contacted us because she found a gorgeous, modern upholstered settee in an unnamed showroom, but wanted it made a different size.

Aware of our ability to create custom pieces from scratch in our custom workroom, she made an appointment to come in and talk to us. We sat down and went online, finding pictures of upholstered modern settees that looked just like the one she saw. After discussing size, fabric, and other specifications, we got to work creating a custom, modern upholstered settee, at one third of the price of the upholstered settee she had originally found! She was so pleased with the price we charged!

Here’s the finished product:

Seven Ideas to Refresh Your Decorating without Remodeling

For interior designers and style enthusiasts alike, interior design is a wonderful creative outlet. It’s a way to tell a home’s story in a way that can be experienced and enjoyed. Occasionally, however, you’ll want to change a few things here and there in your decorating to keep things feeling fresh. This doesn’t mean losing track of your home’s atmosphere, but rather emphasizing your home’s story and adding new pieces of interest to keep things looking lively. If you want to freshen up your home’s decorating and design, but you’re not really sure what you want or how to begin, there are several ways to you can find inspiration for exactly what your decor has been missing.

#1 – Spend Some Time in the Room You Want to Change.

One of the best things you can do to discover ideas for practical changes is simply spending time in the area you want to upgrade. Take a long soak in the bathroom that’s been feeling a little drab, hang out in your bedroom, bake something in the kitchen you want to upgrade, or take the time to thoroughly clean the room in question. Bonus: Cleaning will make any room automatically feel fresher and brighter, and can make it easier to spot things you’d like to decorate differently. Take note of any specific improvement you’d like to make, and then go from there by searching for solutions to the problem.

#2 – Upgrade a Favorite Piece of Furniture.

If you have a favorite piece of furniture that has admittedly seen better days or simply isn’t fitting in with the rest of your decorating scheme as well as you would like it to, give it a fresh new look. This can mean painting, reupholstering, or even remaking a piece into something entirely new. If you’re the do-it-yourself type, you can make a fun weekend project out of it. Otherwise, consult with an interior designer to find the right paint, fabric, and/or carpenter for the job.

#3 – Change the Lighting.

Lighting is an aspect of interior design that does more than just influence the overall atmosphere, but also has an important impact on every individual facet of the design as well. A lighting upgrade might be all it takes to transform a room from boring to engaging, so if you’re not satisfied with the current lighting in a room, it’s a simple way you can make a huge difference to your entire design.

#4 – Add Something New.

Sometimes, all it takes to bring interest back to a room is by making a simple addition. Depending on the budget you’re working with, this can be something as big as a new piece of furniture or beautiful area rug, or something smaller, like a few new books for the coffee table or an attractive nicely-scented candle or two. It really doesn’t have to take a large piece or expensive investment to make a beautiful change, sometimes changing a room can be as simple as adding a new throw blanket and a fresh bouquet of flowers.

#5 – Display a Beloved Treasure.

Your home should be a reflection of the things you love. If you have some personal treasures hidden away in a closet somewhere, why not choose one or two to display? Frame a few vintage family photos, carefully arrange a tray of souvenirs, or have a broken heirloom repaired and made into a display.

#6 – Rearrange Your Living Space.

If you love all of the things you have and can’t think of any additions that would improve the room, consider rearranging a few things. If your furniture isn’t quite as practically placed as it could be or your art just isn’t standing out the way you want it to, simply rearranging a few things can provide a fresh new way of looking at all the things you know and love.

#7 – Keep Searching for Inspiration.

If you would like to find more decorating ideas to get the inspiration you need for your interior design, there are many ways to do so! You can sit down with a book or magazines to read about interior design or browse through photographs of beautiful spaces, you could research interior design styles and decorating ideas online, or you can go window shopping and explore a few stores that appeal to your sense of style where you can find inspiration for new ideas or possibly even the exact piece you need to make your design complete.

If your decor is beginning to feel boring, you don’t have to completely redecorate everything to bring life back into your interior design! By simply remembering to incorporate things that you’ll either enjoy using or love looking at, your interior design will feel less decorated and feel more like a beautiful home that truly tells your story.

Five Ways the Perfect Fabric Can Help Influence Your Interior Design

When you’re thinking about all of the different aspects that go into creating an attractive and effective design, you might be surprised how much the entire picture can be impacted by changing one simple piece of the puzzle. For example, your choice of fabric alone can entirely change the appearance and livability of a room. When it comes to creating an effective style of interior design, each individual aspect needs to be chosen carefully. Not only should the merits of each piece show it belongs with the design, but each piece should also be able to agree with the rest of the design. To create balance and flow, it’s important to never underestimate the importance each piece will play in your final design.

So, how does fabric come into the play of your design? Here’s how you can use five attributes of fabric to influence your interior design exactly the way you want it to.

Using Fabric to Add Color to Your Interior Design

When you look at a piece of fabric, its color is probably the first thing you notice. What is the color of the fabric? Is it a lighter pastel, or a deeper shade? Is it a very bold and highly saturated hue, or is it a more laid-back or subtly grayed hue?

Your color scheme has a significant influence on your design, not just regarding appearance, but for giving the right feel to your design. The fabrics you use for upholstering the furniture you arrange, the draperies and window treatments you hang, your pillows and more, all take part in establishing your color scheme. You can use large areas of fabric to provide a neutral foundation to help bolder colors in the room stand out, or alternatively as a way to showcase a color by creating a bold statement piece. You can use fabric on a smaller scale, to echo parts of your color scheme or provide a manageable source for an accent color.

Fabric Texture for Comfortable Interior Design

When you brush your hand against a piece of fabric, you’ll notice its texture right away. When you’re looking for the prefect fabric for furniture or anything that will be felt often, you’ll obviously want to choose a fabric with an appealing texture to it. Interior design isn’t just about making things look attractive, it’s about creating a livable space. Consider what type of texture you need carefully, and remember to keep comfort and textile-appeal in mind while you explore your fabric options.

Incorporating Visible Texture with Fabric

Of course, texture isn’t just something you feel, but also something that you see. Good design incorporates a pleasing balance of textures, and fabric provides a source for finding any type of visual texture you want. Designs aimed for a warm and comfortable living space can benefit greatly from fabrics with a lot of texture, while smooth and elegant designs might be improved with the use of silky and satiny fabrics with more flow. Visual texture from fabrics can be emphasized by lighting to achieve the right effect.

Using Patterned Fabric for Effect

When it comes to finding the perfect patterns for your design, fabric is a popular solution, because it can provide you with nearly endless possibilities. There are solid colors to add strength, soft and subtle patterns to add additional visual texture without being overwhelming, and bold patterns to attract the eye—and all of these in an array of colors, from soft pastels to louder hues. Fabric provides a lot of options for changing how your design looks, and finding the perfect pattern can be a great way to subtly add an additional layer of interest to your design.

Add Interest to Your Interior Design with Printed Fabric

Sometimes, nothing but a particular type of print will do. Fabric can be found with prints featuring nearly any subject matter. Tapestries turn these prints into artwork, showcasing the fabric and occasionally using it to create a focal point for the room. On a smaller scale, printed fabric provides an excellent way to reinforce the theme or idea of the room. Fabric can be used as a very simple way to add an interesting accessory to a design. Whatever subject or elements you’d like to add to your design, there’s a fabric out there with the perfect print of exotic animals or ocean waves, just waiting for you to find it.

Not only will the color, patterns, prints, and textures of the fabric you choose influence the appearance of your interior design; your fabric choice is vital for giving the room the right feel and comfort. Remember a good rule from Timothy Corrigan: “It’s comfort first, comfort last, comfort always.”

Adapting your decor to create your dream bathroom.

Adapting Your Decor Ideas for the Perfect Bathroom

When the subject of bathroom decor comes up, many people automatically start thinking in terms of complete remodeling, with no middle ground for decorating in mind. That couldn’t be further from the truth! If you really pause to look at photos of “dream bathrooms”, you’ll realize that beautiful bathroom decor is created from the very same components that make up any other type of interior decorating. In fact, with a little creative thinking, you can adapt nearly anything to work into your bathroom decor.

What is Your Ideal Bathroom?

Just as decorating any other room in your home, you need to begin your bathroom decorating by creating a plan, so you can get the final results you want without losing track of the project. Don’t be afraid to spend some time looking for ideas before you sit down and start drafting out your plan.

There are a few factors you might want to keep in mind as you go:

The overall decorating style in the rest of your home. For the best effect, the decorating throughout your home should flow easily from one room to the next, not jolt from one extreme to another.

The atmosphere you want to create. Will you want your bathroom to have energy, to make for easier early mornings? Would you prefer a relaxing style, for unwinding at the end of a long day? Do you need a middle ground decorating style, so you can change the atmosphere to fit your mood?

Your unique needs and everyday living. It’s important to create bathroom decor that not only looks the way you want, but that also works the way you need it to. If you have particular needs or wants that will help improve the function or comfort of your bathroom, make them a higher priority than changes that solely affect the appearance of your bathroom decor.

Influencing the General Style & Color Scheme

Whether you’re interested in decorating with a simple color scheme or a more complex one, there are nearly endless ways for you to bring the colors you want into your bathroom decor. Similarly, there are many ways to change the style of your bathroom decor.

It may help to think of your bathroom as being divided into two groups: Firm Decor and Flexible Additions:

Firm Decor consists of things such as structural parts, flooring, bathtubs and showers, counters, and cabinets. Essentially, anything that would be considered remodeling should you decide to change it. If your bathroom plan includes changes to Firm Decor, it’s best to choose chameleon styles and neutral colors that will work well with a range of other styles and colors.

Flexible Additions are things that are easier (and less expensive) to change and update. This includes things like towel sets, window and shower curtains, and other accessories. Because Flexible Additions to your bathroom decor are easy to change, you can get more creative and experiment with changes to your style and color scheme. You can emphasize a particular color by echoing it throughout your bathroom decor, incorporate an accent of an entirely new color to change things up, or even create a new color scheme altogether.

Adding Texture

Texture is one of the key aspects of interior decorating, so don’t be afraid to incorporate new textures throughout your bathroom decor. There are numerous possibilities available for fabrics that are capable of withstanding the humid conditions of the bathroom, from silky and smooth to roughed and fluffy, which makes adding fabric an easy way to make a big impact on your bathroom decor. You might want to consider fabrics that are designed for outdoor use as a durable choice for upholstering vanity seats, making shower and window curtains, and creating textile artwork.

Set the Atmosphere with Lighting

Of course, we can’t forget the importance that lighting plays in setting the atmosphere in interior design. From dim switches and chandeliers to bright skylights and recessed lighting, don’t underestimate the importance of finding the right type of lighting to make the most of your bathroom decor.

Artwork & Accessories

As long as you keep in mind the humidity and environmental conditions, decorating your bathroom isn’t limited to anything less than interior decorating for any other part of your home. You can use that frame you love around a bathroom mirror, incorporate artwork created or protected for outdoor patio use, bring the room together with a beautiful rug- the possibilities are truly endless!

Be Creative

Gone are the days of shag carpeted toilet lid covers and everything-dolphin-themed bathrooms! No matter what style or atmosphere you’re looking to create, and no matter what type of budget you’re working with, it’s not difficult to decorate your dream bathroom if you’re willing to think creatively. Don’t forget to enjoy your project and really make it your own.
